A new laptop!

After 5 years, I've finally broken down & bought a new laptop. I've got all the base programs I need installed. I need to find out if Photoshop Elements will handle the .CR2 raw Canon files, and I need a new compact flash reader card, as the new machine has a PCMCI express port as opposed the older PCMCI port I had in my prior one. I'm in the process of transfering all my photos to the new one. I might be done in a couple of days :{).

Rochester Night Life Nov. 10th, 2009 @ 09:24 pm
The other night I had an inspirational moment. I thought that the Rochester skyline at night was quite breathtaking. I had to stay a little late at work tonight so I brought the camera & tripod & took 2 shots of the Rochester skyline just after sunset.

Rochester_nightlife_1

This is the skyline looking west from the building where I work. On the left is the Times Square building, left of center is the Rochester Colonial water tower, right of center is where the Changing Scenes Restaurant (a revolving restaurant)used to be. to the right is the Kodak building. The Kodak sign isn't lit due to exterior renovations on the building.

Rochester_nightlife_2

This is the view to the southwest of my building. Left of center is the dome at the University of Rochester, and on the right is the Frederick Douglas/Susan B. Anthony bridge. The Genesee River is outlined by Mt. Hope Ave on the left, and State St. on the right.

As usual the large photos are under here )

Survey Says Nov. 8th, 2009 @ 04:18 pm
Here's the resulting pile from yesterday's efforts

Leaves

The pile is ~ 3' high & 5' wide at the base.

We had our family Thanksgiving today. It was nice to see some of my relatives that I only see once a year. I of course had too much to eat.

I just love fall....NOT! Nov. 7th, 2009 @ 07:22 pm
when it comes to raking leaves. It only took me a day, and there's more this year than I remember from last year. Let the aches begin! However I do love the leaves when they change color. My prior post shows some of the delightful scenery near my house, and if you head on over to my Zooomr page you can see a lot more.

Random item: AT&T commercial came on, and every time I see one I'm reminded of this article. I have to wonder about the iPhone & Verizon, or whether the Droid will take off well enough for Verizon to not pick up the iPhone next year.

We ended up with about 1 bag's worth of sugary goodies left over last wek.

Hello again Oct. 31st, 2009 @ 02:15 pm
Its been a while since I've posted. Yesterday I snuck up on the roof & took some shots of downtown Rochester. I entered one of the shots, along with a pair of composites that I made of Irondequoit Bay into a cover contest for the Rochester phone book.

The Gensee River that splits Rochester in half.

The North end of Irondequoit Bay. Lake Ontario is on the right of the strip of land. This is a composite of 3 photos.

South Bay composite 2

This is the south end of Irondequoit Bay with the Rt. 104 bay bridge in the background. This is also a composite of 3 photos.

We're ready for the munchkins tonight! I just hope 5 bags of candy is sufficient.
Happy Howloween y'all

I entered 3 photos into the Wayne County Council of the Arts photo contest for October. This shot won me Honorable mention:

H2

I was quite stoked to say the least.

A coworker asked me to go & shoot her son's youth football game. It was a great day, and a good game. It was nice to get back to my photographic "roots" I only had 2 shots that I can post until after I get the orders back.
» What an August month this is
August is the best month of the year to me. It has two markers for me: My birthday(as well as my sister, and my youngest niece), which also means I need to start hitting the streets to get ready for hockey. However this year an added milestone is my 25th reunion. I've already manged to re-acquaint myself with one of my old friends, who lived near me, but I'd lost touch with some years ago. It'll be interesting to see how everyone has turned out since I last saw them 10 years ago.

I also found some old Rochester Amerks photos on a flash card yesterday. Today I went & got out the CDs from 04 & posted some photos on my photo site: http://www.zooomr.com/photos/33233z01/ I got a big boost in photography shooting the Amerks in 04 & 05. There will be more posted in the coming days.

I started scraping the garage today. I got the north side (shorter side of the garage), and almost 1/2 of the west side done. I think I've convinced Dad to borrow or rent a paint sprayer once I get the scraping done, so we can prime & paint in a single weekend.
» Old Forge Part deux
We stayed in Old Forge which is on First Lake. Here's a shot of a colorful boathouse that caught the setting sun light just right:

Somebody decided to have some fun with the fountain in the park adjoining the lake:

The soap suds were gone the next morning.

For those of you who are interested in astronomical photos, NASA has archived their stuff into a website: http://www.nasaimages.org/

I haven't gone through the site too throroughly, but there's some nice composites of our solar system in there.

I had some time off 2 weeks ago, so the munchkin & I did a little traveling. First we headed over to Ilion NY, birthplace of the Remington Arms Company & home of a little firearms museum.

Here's a double derringer that was on display:

And another well decorated pocket pistol:

Then we headed north up Rt. 28 to Old Forge NY. We hiked up Bald Mountain where we had a few chances to enjoy the view, like this shot of either Fourth Lake, or possibly Seventh Lake.

Bald Mountain 4

At the top of Bald Mountain is the Rondax Fire Tower, which was restored over the last couple of years:

I'll post more as the week progresses.
